Panilop: Hand-woven bags of Surigao Mamanwa tribe

mamanwa handicraft

Mamanwa is the second poorest Indigenous Peoples groups in the Philippines. They rank number one among the least literate, and the least in number among 110 tribes in the Philippines. But they have innate gifts and we would like to share them with you.

The tribe members area gathering rattan to weave big baskets (bangkel) and hammocks. These are usually bought cheaply by people in the areas. Their products are bought at a cheap price, making them vulnerable to injustice and discrimination. Through Market Link we would like the world to see and appreciate the real value of this group’s arts. This will also help the Mamanwas with their basic needs: food and education.

The Indigenous People Apostolate - sisters is taking efforts to help address the needs of these people through networking with government and non-government organisations for seminars, trainings, and other livelihood programs, including funding for possible projects that can provide assistance to the Mamanwa.

Pinilop or hand-woven rattan shoulder bags, Peanut Bags (smaller pinilop), and other bags with different sizes, including hats, are products of the tribe of Mamanwa. These are beautiful handicrafts that can be used as gifts and souvenirs. You may request Sister Annabelle for more information through 0928-797—8309
