Over the weekend news broke out about a tragic encounter that happened in Mamasapano, Maguindanao between the Special Action Forces of the Philippine National Police and MILF armed groups where around 60 people were killed and a few got wounded. We commiserate with the families of those who perished. We feel saddened and shocked over this incident especially that the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) are on the negotiating tables and working for the immediate passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) in both Congress and Senate.
(Updated 01/21/15) Eastern Samar Bishop Crispin Varquez last January 20 handed out a letter to Pope Francis, thru the Apostolic Nunciate in Manila, to solicit the pontiff’s help in advocating for a just and environment-friendly development in Manicani and Homonhon, two islands off the coast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.
PMPI partners applaud both the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) panels on completing the Comprehensive Agreement on Bangsamoro (CAB) and looks forward that final peace agreement will bring peace and development in the Mindanao region.
CAB will be signed later today at Malacanan Palace.
PMPI Task Force on Peace met last February 24 to 25 to tackle updates on the ongoing peace talks of the government, to discuss the plan on peace as one of PMPI thematic concerns, and to write a peace framework for the network.
