A major project is slated to take over a prominent part of the Kennedy Expressway for multiple years, impacting many Chicago-area commuters in a matter of weeks as officials urge drivers to find "alternative routes.". It will be critical for the Department to protect the public interest by using a PPP structure that transfers some of the risk to the private partner. John F Kennedy Expressway (I-90 and I-94) - Chicago Area Roads and Exits Left turns at the intersection will continue to be prohibited. In addition to the bridge work, crews will also repair potholes, patch the roadway and paint Hubbards Cave. The two left lanes will be closed until work is completed in July, at which point work will switch to the two right lanes. There is a need to evaluate a long-term funding strategy for this project, which could include tolling. Construction of three new retaining walls and repairs to two existing retaining walls. Construction in 2024 will focuson reversible lanes, which will be closed to rehab the roadway and modernize the 52-year-old system that controls the gates to the express lanes. A new through-lane will also be added on I-90/94, correcting a deficiency that forces drivers to switch lanes when entering the interchange. The estimated $150 million project will include rehabilitating of 36 bridge structures and the Reversible Lane Access Control (REVLAC) system, replacing overhead sign-structures, installing new signage and modernized LED lights, pavement patching and structural painting.
