The Philippine Misereor Partnership Inc. stands in solidarity with the Filipino people, whose lives, homes, and livelihoods have been greatly affected, not only by the recent flooding incidents but also by the long-term systemic graft and corruption that has been happening in the country.

With these so-called โflood-control projects,โ billions of public funds have been utilized in building substandard infrastructure, abandoned works, and ghost projects, creating new challenges instead of resolving the problem for the public good. It puts the taxpayersโ money to waste; it puts every Filipinoโs life at risk, and also harms and further destroys our already ailing ecosystems.

Corruption steals food from our table, education from our children, medicine from the sick, shelter for the homeless, and opportunity from the poor. We work tirelessly to see a large portion of our salaries lost to taxes, yet we are still denied the very benefits that these taxes are meant to provide.

It prevents the Philippines from becoming a country that truly prioritizes the well-being of all its citizens. It robs us of access to adequate healthcare, efficient transportation, quality education, reliable infrastructure, and a healthy environment that secures clean air, safe water, and protected ecosystems for all. It robs us of hope for opportunities, services, and the nation we rightfully deserve as Filipinos.

We are exhausted by a rotten system that goes in circles and leads to nowhere, where no one is held accountable, and allows corruption to repeat itself, tearing down the very soul of the nation.
