“ANG KAMPANYA NG SILANG SAGIP KALIKASAN”
Silang Sagip Kalikasan, a newly established environmental protection organization that has united various stakeholders with a common concern for the Silang River System, recently held an organizational meeting with the Silangueno’s to discuss how they can safeguard Silang’s Precious River System being destroyed now by DPWH’s flood mitigation program.
The event called “ANG KAMPANYA NG SILANG SAGIP KALIKASAN” held last August 11, 2023, at Silang, Cavite, gathered different stakeholders and the Silangueno’s to discuss how they can safeguard Silang’s Precious River System which is now being destroyed by DPWH’s flood mitigation project.
Ms. Eileen Sison discussed and introduced the SSK Campaign, while Prof. Noel Sedigo presented the research results on Silang River System. It was also discussed that the Silang River System is considered an “environmentally – critical area” because it serves as the “groundwater recharge area” that supplies water to households, agriculture, and industrial and recreational demands in Cavite. The river is the major source of water in Silang Cavite and the DPWH flood mitigation program has destroyed the forests surrounding it. It has now compromised the critical functions of rivers and will further lead Silang Cavite to ecological degradation, loss of biodiversity, and disruption of natural processes.
There are already reports of wildlife animals like Musangs being displaced because of the destruction of the forests.
A Rights of Nature orientation was also given to provide a bigger framework why ecosystem destruction is happening not only in Silang but nationally and internationally and the importance of protecting the ecosystems.
Let us support the fight of Silang Cavite in protecting the Silang River System.
