Philippine Misereor Partnership Inc. (PMPI) extends its heartfelt gratitude to Hon. Solon, Steve Chiongbian, Sarangani District Representative, Lone District, for his invaluable co-authorship of HB 7165. This significant Act, originally filed by Cong. Arnan Panaligan, stands as a beacon for the advancement of the Rights of Nature in the Philippines.
The introduction of HB 7165, which champions the Rights of Nature in our nation, represents a profound declaration of the State’s commitment to the recognition and safeguarding of natural ecosystems, distinct segments, and vital processes. These entities are acknowledged as legal entities endowed with fundamental and immutable rights.
This pivotal legislation, authored by the esteemed Congressman Arnan Panaligan of Oriental Mindoro’s 1st district, and thoughtfully co-authored by the Hon. Solon, Steve Chiongbian, resonates as a living testament to the evolving perspectives of our lawmakers. It signifies a remarkable shift towards a new legal framework within the Philippines.
“It is clear to us that we can only defend human rights when we confer rights on nature. We therefore bring Rights of Nature to the centre of society. Furthermore, once the Rights of Nature bill attains legal status, it will play a pivotal role in mitigating the growing disastrous impacts of climate change on our fellow countrymen,” shared Ms. Yoly Esguerra, National Coordinator of PMPI.
Last July 7, 2022, Senator Risa Hontiveros refiled the RoN bill in the Senate.
Support and lobby for the Rights of Nature and protect our country’s ecosystems.
