Our oceans have long been subject to exploitation and destruction at the hands of humans, and current laws and international agreements have done very little to protect it and the biodiversity it supports.

And by granting our oceans legal rights as human beings would have, it will provide a framework for holding individuals, industries, and governments accountable for responsible ocean stewardship, pollution and climate change’s devastating impacts.

The Universal Declaration of Ocean Rights (UDOR) was launched by the professional sporting group, Ocean Race, in 2022. In partnership with Earth Law Center, Nature’s Rights, and various national governments, the UDOR aims to give our oceans legal rights within a multilateral governance system.

The Rights of Nature and Rights of Ocean both recognize the Earth’s interconnectedness and that the well-being of the ocean is integral to the well-being of the entire planet. As we better understand the critical role oceans play in regulating climate, providing food, and supporting life, the movement for the rights of the ocean gains traction as a means to combat the degradation of this crucial ecosystem.
